State Supreme Court Tosses Newhall Ranch Development’s Enviromental Report

California’s Supreme Court has rejected an environmental impact report for a massive housing development west of Santa Clarita — potentially setting back the project for years.

The court on Monday said the report for Newhall Ranch improperly dealt with greenhouse gas emissions and protection of an endangered freshwater fish, the unarmored threespine stickleback.

Construction plans call for altering the Santa Clara River where the fish lives.

The case was sent back to an appeals court, although a dissenting judge argued more court wrangling could cause years of delays.

The Newhall Ranch project would build homes for nearly 60,000 residents and 5 ½ million square feet of commercial space over 30 years.

Opponents sued the developer, Newhall Land and Farming Co., and the California Department of Fish and Game.
